Shuttle Atlantis: Meet a Legend

Today's the unveiling of the retired Shuttle Atlantis at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.  I should be there.  I was there during construction of the new Atlantis facility when they had just received the Atlantis and she remained shrink wrapped.  I still ogled.  Shrink wrapped or not, she was magnificent.

Atlantis would not be cleaned up for America, she would be unveiled and on display with all her dings, scratches and smudges.  That would be today.  Today she will be unveiled, the shrink wrap removed and the construction completed.  No hard hats for today's visitors.

(look closely in this photo, you can see Deborah's reflection
Imagine me there next to her.... )

I was invited back for today's grand opening.  I could not afford another trip right now, so I declined.  Many of my fellow space enthusiasts and new friends who were on the hard hat tour with me are down there today, full of excitement, tweeting this and tweeting that.  I sit home, jealous.

The Atlantis Shuttle Exhibit at Kennedy Space Center opens today.  Above is the picture of the exhibit when I saw it, under construction.  Today it is a 90,000 square foot exhibit that shares the story of NASA's 30-year shuttle program.

And I'm sitting home.  Reading the exciting tweets from my space friends who are down there:

"Good Morning tweeps!  It's a great day to meet a legend, isn't it?" - @DeborahHerman

"This is why I backed Grace from Outer Space on kickstarter.  We need stuff for girls, too.  You know that sends a message other than "be pretty." - @KristenFitzpat1

And my fave:  "@VSliker, We will miss you!!" - @KristenFitzpat1

Sadly, I will go about my business today in a town where nobody is interested in the Atlantis or the shuttle program or commercial space flight or an outpost on the moon...... But I'll be checking the tweets all day long!  Send some good pics my way!

WWJD

"This is what God the Lord says -- He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it . . .
(what a marvelous spread, no?)

. . . who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it:

"I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand.  I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness."

This view of the mountains always makes me want to run my hand across the mountain tops and feel the smooth bumps and cool dips in the shadows.  It reminds me of how big God is and how real I feel His presence in my life at times.  And other times, I feel nothing, as though He steps back for a bit to let me get on with it if I'm so determined to do it my way.

I know He doesn't act that way, His Word tells us who He is and that's not Him.  But sometimes it feels like that.

Anyway, in this passage, Isaiah prophesied about Jesus an easy 700 years before Jesus was born.  And when I think WWJD - What Would Jesus Do - I look to this passage, it tells us exactly what Jesus would do.  And sadly, I think that's not what we Christians in the 21st century do.   I know I don't.  It's not my default setting, but I try.  Sometimes.

WWJD:

"He will not shout or cry out, or raise His voice in the streets.  A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out.  In faithfulness He will bring forth justice; He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth."

Give Foward: Giving with Significance, Changing Lives with Your Donations

Two months ago I shared a chance for you to make a significant difference in someone's life.  I have an update to share with you, a pat on the back for your generosity and a plea for just a wee bit more help.

My cousin, Melissa, at the age of 52 suffered a major stroke that destroyed her brain's language center and left her with many other physical limitations.  That was two years ago.

Melissa had to gradually re-learn how to swallow and how to hold her head upright on her neck.  She needed to learn how to stand again despite the fact that she had been an athlete, a dancer who taught dance to women in prison.  Her professional life had been dedicated to fundraising for medical research at universities and hospitals.

Two months ago, Melissa's sister began a fundraising effort to provide funds necessary for Melissa to attend a 30-day intensive aphasia program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Melissa needed $26,000 to get into this program to get her speech back.  $21,873 has been raised in just two months!  The generosity of people all over the world is amazing.  If you could possibly spare just a little bit more, speaking will become a reality for Melissa.  Pass this on to your friends.  People like to help and to support each other in meaningful ways.  Fundraising sites like Give Forward makes it safe and reliable to match a need with someone who wants to give.

There are times for each of us when we need help and there are times when we can give back.  If you are in a position to give, please consider Melissa Drane or many others with various needs on the Give Forward site.

Let me finish by saying thank you!  Melissa and Melanie thank you.  Here's a personal note from Melanie, Melissa's sister.

It seemed unfair to me that such a gregarious, fun-loving woman would lose her language. Melissa was the friend who could be counted on to host dinner for holidays, birthdays, or any other excuse. She was the organizer, the bon vivant, and the last person on the dance floor—until her ischemic stroke hit the left side of her brain, and destroyed her language function.  She was left her unable to say her own name.
I still cannot fathom what it must be like for her to sit in silence now—I try, but I can never fully know her experience; she is locked inside with her own thoughts of this new life.  I miss her voice desperately.
Neural plasticity and brain rehabilitation are brave new frontiers in medicine. We know that repetition and intensity are the essential factors to brain recovery. If I can get her to the intensive aphasia camp in Chicago, she will have the much-needed therapy that she lost when her health insurance ended. In fact, she will have six hours a day of treatment—!
As a result of your compassion, generosity, prayers, and encouragement, the Drane Sisters are almost there!
We are nearing the end of this fundraising campaign, and every day, we are a little closer to the goal. Please join me in getting the word out about this effort. I hope that we will one day be able to host a victory party, where Melissa can thank you in her own words.
Much love, and deepest gratitude to all who have accompanied us on this long journey.

Toast Four Slices in a Two-Slice Toaster: A Morse Test Kitchen Thumbs Up

Guest Writer:  The Cheap Senior Citizen

Jim and I will celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary next week. Believe it or not, in all of that time, we have only owned two toasters. Both of them were 2-slicers.

Up until now, if Jim and I wanted two pieces of toast each, the only option was to make two pieces, set them aside, make the other two while the first two pieces got cold. Being the kind wife, I always gave Jim the hot slices and ate the cold ones myself. Are you feeling my pain?

No more! No more! Wait till you read this nifty idea I read online.

To be perfectly honest, the concept sounded perfectly dumb. I ran it through the MORSE TEST KITCHEN to prove it didn't work.
But!
Oddly enough, it works.

Get yourself four slices of bread. Put two of those slices right up against each other and into slot #1 of the toaster.

Obviously, you don't want your slices of bread to look like that!
Line them up nicely.....

Chasing Francis by Ian Morgan Cron: Book Review

Chasing Francis:  A Pilgrim’s Tale
Ian Morgan Cron
Zondervan

Chasing Francis is the fictional account of a wildly popular pastor of an evangelical mega church who one day lost his lid.  He awoke one day to find that his religion seemed to be less than the “real thing.”    He felt like his faith was quite suddenly shallow and lacking a solid foundation.  This surprised him, left him perplexed.

“I’d considered myself one of the privileged few the heavens had endowed with a perfectly true compass…… one day I would see the boxes neatly checked off next to each of my life goals.  I liked myself a lot.”

His pat answers no longer satisfied.

“Now I’m the one who’s thirsty….. and the Jesus I’ve known for 20 years isn’t making it go away.”

This Pastor took a sabbatical and visited his uncle, a Franciscan Monk in Italy.  This led him on a pilgrimage through Italy, chasing St. Francis of Assisi, eager to learn everything he could about St. Francis.  And he shares it all with us.  It's amazing.

What’s ironic is that this is exactly how I was feeling when I agreed to review this book.  And I think a lot of evangelicals are beginning to feel this as well and that, my friend, is called “Post-Evangelicalism.”  The previously unnamed cry of my heart I will now call Post Evangelicalism.

I finished this book at the top of a mountain,
3800 feet above sea level,
and thought it was going to change my life entirely.

And it did.
Until I descended the mountain.
Real life infringed and stuffed me back in my little box.  But I think I will break out and let this book transform my life for real.  Soon.  Tomorrow.  Or maybe next Friday.
