Watercolour Ponies

"There are watercolour ponies
On my refrigerator door
And the shape of something
I don't really recognize
Drawn by careful little fingers
And put proudly on display
A reminder to us all
Of how time flies
-
Seems an endless mound of laundry
And a stairway laced with toys
Gives a blow by blow
Reminder of the war
That we fight for their well-being
For their greater understanding

To impart a holy reverance
For the Lord
-
-
But, baby, what will we do
When it comes back to me and you?
They look a little less
Like little boys every day
Oh, the pleasure of watching
The children growing
Is mixed with a bitter cup
Of knowing the watercolour ponies
Will one day ride away
-
-

And the vision can get so narrow

As you view through your tiny world
And little victories can go by
With no applause
But in the greater evaluation
As they fly from your nest of love
May they mount up with wings
As eagles for His cause."

This song was penned and sung by Wayne Watson in 1987 and put on an album by that same name. Watson is one of the first contemporary Christian artists to which Tom & I became attracted. We now have most of his "albums." Watson & his wife are just a couple years ahead of me & Tom, so we relate well to his subject matter.

This song, in particular, was about parenting. Watson has many songs about parenting, ministry, the passing of life, marriage, empty nesting, etc, and I think I'd have to say my favorite albums are "The Field of Souls" and "Living Room," but, oh my goodness, they are all so good. "Beautiful Place," "Home Free," the list goes on.

Click here & here for interesting interviews with Watson.

All of this artwork was done by my kids who are now 17-22. Yes, I still keep their artwork on my fridge, on a rotational basis. Some of it has been there for 15 years, but it seems like yesterday. My, how time flies.

Wait 'till you're grandparents and these pics are on your fridge and you're watching the grandchildren "flying away", lots of tears for times missed.
