Practical Household Hints From a Life Well Lived

Guest Writer:  Ruth Morse

I think you can safely say that I am not a glass-half-full type of person. I like to think of my mindset as REALISTIC or PRACTICAL. However, other people might label it NEGATIVE.

Be that as it may, I have a few negative tips to pass on today. Following these negative tips bring positive results. So that's practical. Right?

•DON’T store your eggs on the refrigerator door. In fact, DON'T take them out of the carton! Just put the carton on one of the inner shelves, where temps are lower. You don't want salmonella as a house guest!

•DON’T put a crayon in the dryer......
I suppose no one would do that on purpose, but DON’T even do it accidentally! You will end up with a permanent strange mini-tie dyed effect on your clothes.

•DON’T burn colored newspapers or magazines in your fireplace. They contain lead and will emit dangerous levels of the lead. Yikes!

•DON’T rub in circles when cleaning a CD. Instead, rub a soft clean clothacross it to remove dust and fingerprints. And the strawberry jam.

•DON’T wash windows on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and streak and you will be grumpy.

•DON’T ever put food in a naked crock-pot. What's a naked crock-pot? It is a slow cooker with no protection on it. I always give my stone liner a spritz or two of cooking spray before I put any food inside, even if it does not seem like the food will cause a sticking problem. Makes clean up so much easier! And I am much, much, much too cheapo to buy those crock pot liners. Knowing me, I would manage to rip the bag or drop the contents or burn it somehow. So I go the cheap route. I DON’T buy PAM brand cooking spray, by the way. The cheaper, store brands work just fine and are--guess what?---much cheaper! Cha-Ching!

•DON’T ever put a hot curling iron next to the TV remote. Yes indeedy, the remote will melt. I've done the research on this tip so learn from my expertise!

Ruth: Hey, Val, can I submit a voucher for a new remote?
Val: I DON’T think so!

...and one more thing......
uh, I'll get back to you when I remember it.

just so you know...Pam cooking spray often puts coupons in the sunday circular so if you pair the coupon with the sale price you can often get it for cheap. just a couple of weeks ago i was able to get several cans for 35 cents a piece.
