What I'm Reading/Listening To

"There's something rotten in the state of America. It is something phony, belligerent, and toxic in the culture." "The values we have as families and individuals aren't reflected in the collective culture..... The recipes of self-discovery and do-it-yourself spirituality we have used to replace more traditional religions, social codes and worldviews aren't working." - Dick Meyer

"When revelation was displaced by reason, when truth was subverted by agnosticism and the propositional replaced by the visual, it left a whole generation with a vacuum too big for this world to fill." - Ravi Zacharias

"I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love which Christ Jesus our Lord shows us. We can't be separated by death or life, by angels or rulers, by anything in the present or anything in the future, by forces or powers in the world above or in the world below or by anything else in creation." - Apostle Paul, Romans 8:38,39

"The ultimate test of any civilization is what it does with its children. And our children today are dangerously close to lawlessness, anarchy and hopelessness because there's nobody pointing the way except telling them to find it in their own mind." - Ravi Zacharias

"Meaninglessness doesn't come from being weary of pain; meaninglessness comes from being weary of pleasure, that's why we are bankrupt of meaning in a land of so much." - Ravi Zacharias

"The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." - II Corinthians 4:4

"A crucial but puzzling aspect of our distemper is that it comes at a time of extraordinary peace and prosperity by any historic measure." - Dick Meyer

"My hypothesis is that there is a kind of famine of warm interpersonal relationships, of easy-to-reach neighbors, of encircling, inclusive memberships, and of solidary family life. There is much evidence that for people lacking in social support of this kind, unemployment has more serious effects, illnesses are more deadly, disappointment with one's children is harder to bear, bouts of depression last longer, and frustration and failed expectations of all kinds are more traumatic." - Robert E. Lane

"...selfism, which is American individualism redefined by the age of marketing, self-help, moral relativism, and belief that the "self" is something that can be deliberately found or made...." "...reinventing yourself is now a recognized corporate skill taught by human resources departments and personal coaches and thus more commercialized and marketed. Selfism is different than regular old narcissism and egomania because of this commercialized, mass-market aspect. It is different than the older, can-do, self-made-man American spirit because it substitutes feeling for doing." - Dick Meyer

"The gospel of grace infiltrates this world not primarily through words and rational arguments, but through deeds, through love." - Philip Yancey

"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." - Romans 12:2

"The greatest hunger of humanity is the hunger for worship, therefore, millions of people in the world find some form of worship which they try to adhere to." - Zacharias

"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is pointless, because their teachings are rules made by humans." - Jesus, Mark 7:6,7

Hard to argue with much if any of that. Put together and read together it is hard not to despair but I know the strength to change will have to come from on high.

I think it's interesting how many people are feeling the same thing. Thanks for your comments.

Trying to find the balance between this post and yesterday's post, it's a fine line.
