NASA is Now Hiring Astronaut Recruits

NASA is now hiring.  Well.  By "now," I mean Spring 2013.  They are accepting applications now and will hire between 9 and 15 recruits by Spring 2013.

NASA is looking for astronauts willing to go to Mars and beyond.
"NASA is continuing space exploration programs that will include missions beyond low Earth orbit."
Beyond low Earth orbit?  Because low Earth orbit is so yesterday.....

NASA is looking for people with advanced degrees in engineering, math, biology or the physical sciences. You can't be shorter than 5'2" or taller than 6'3". Pilots with more than 1,000 hours of flight time are desired; so are educators.  I'm out of the running on so many counts.

Currently, according to this npr report, there are about 60 active astronauts but only a handful blast off into space each year.  I find it odd that I grew up with one of the "handful" astronauts.  What are the odds?
