Planting: 3 Tips for Success

 Guest Writer:  Ruth Morse
Here in NYS, we've had a cool, wet spring. It wasn't until this week that it was safe to finally plant tomato plants and other fragile things.

My mother loved being outside, working in the yard. She'd have been out, even in these dismal days, puttering. Cleaning up flower beds, picking up sticks after each and every rain, doing anything she could think of just to be outside.

I am NOT my mother.

A side note: a few weeks ago, I played Scrabble with son Paul and grandson Slater. When we were done, Paul said I sounded like mom during the game. Huh? I do NOT sound like my mother.

But this week we've had some beautiful days and we finally got the bedding plants and a couple of new perennials in the ground. And our vegetable garden? That consists of two Earth Boxes. We've raised our tomato "crop" in an Earth Box the last two years.
These are specialized planters that, due to a carefully designed watering system, give maximum yield......

Pierogi Grill, Clearwater, FL

A wonderful Polish woman took the place of my grandmother's mother when grandma's mom died young.  This Polish woman became "grandma" to my mother, leaving my mother awash with Polish culture.  Let me tell you, those people can eat.  I had no idea how much of my childhood foods were Polish in origin until I grew up and couldn't find these foods anywhere.  Kielbasa, kalatchkies, pierogis, real sauerkraut, and Golabki --"Pigs in a blanket" (stuffed cabbage rolls).

Pierogis:

So I grew up, left home fast & furious like so many before me.  With the wisdom of a 20-year old woman, I left mom's recipes back at home with her......

The Original "Hey, Vern"

Remember Ernest and Vern, two TV commercial characters created by comedian Jim Varney, Jr. in 1980?  Varney would come on as "Ernest" and he would often be talking to "Vern," who remained off-camera.  The slogans "KnoWutIMean?" and "Hey,Vern...." took the country by storm.

My father and grandfather instantly became Ernest and Vern to the rest of us.  Well.  Not quite.  They became Vern and Vern.  Then, years later, my father's two sons-in-law became Verns also.  And even today it's not uncommon to hear "Hey, Vern" several times when we're all together.

"Hey, Vern..."

There were a few decades when Vern and Vern enjoyed tinkering with used cars.....

St. Martin, Caribbean Islands, My Experience

#2 of two posts on St. Martin's.

St. Martin's, approached from the sea, is exactly what I expected – bright-colored water dotted with the white sails of many yachts floating between outcroppings of hilly land. I stood towering over the island, coffee in hand, as our cruise ship slowly approached. This is not my preferred mode of travel, but effective, none-the-less.

Warm breeze through my hair, sun reflecting off houses dotting the hillside, this is the stuff of dreams and I was savoring every minute of it.

Typical of cruise ports, my introduction to the island was generic -- excursion guides, discount coupon books, shopping maps, mass crowds of consumers let loose on paradise and encouraged to stay within established parameters and lavishly part with their money.

We were a group of 6 eager to escape the crowds, get off the leash and explore on our own.....

St. Martin, Caribbean Isands

If you head south out of New York City and go about 1,460 miles, you'll end up on the beautiful island of St. Martin in the Caribbean Virgin Islands.

Saint Martin/Sint Maarten says serenity to me. Peace, beauty, nature, warm breezes, crazy-good views, solitude, family, friends, people, relationships..... mountain biking. If I ever go back, I will rent a bike.  Read my story about our trip here.

On my visit, we rented Jeeps, which was better than a bike on that particular trip......

The Unwasted Life

So my daughter selected a book off my shelf, "Don't Waste Your Life" by John Piper.  She blew the dust off it and began to read fast and furious, reminding me that I should read it again and I wish I had read it when I was her age.
Then today I found this video that reinforces the book, this is so well said.  I think America is approaching a great revival.  I've felt it in my own soul and I hear the cry gaining momentum all around me.

School Morning Rush

November, 2005

It was a usual school morning around the house, kids rushing about, eating, gathering money, last minute parent signatures . . . .

When it was time to leave, Tommy grabbed his keys; Marj, her backpack.  They both entered the foyer at the same exact time, face to face, coming from two different directions.

Simultaneously, they both screamed, "NO!!" and stopped abruptly.  Face to face, they had on the exact same T-Shirt.

It was followed by "you change!"  "No, you change!"  "No, YOU change!"  Finally, Tommy changed and off they went.

Chicken Meatballs ala Rachael Ray

I just tried a new recipe from Rachael Ray's June/July 2011 issue, just in the nick of time for a Tasty Tuesday post.   The recipe sounds bizarre, don't be afraid.  It was yummy.  Tom gave it the "once-a-month" thumbs up.  I gave it the "once-every-7-weeks" thumbs up.

Chicken Meatballs with Sweet Peanut Sauce

1 lb ground chicken  (I know!  Who knew?)
1/2 c chopped cilantro
1/4 c dried breadcrumbs
1/4 c grated onion
2 cloves garlic, grated
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 c peanut butter
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
3 Tbsp. sugar
3 Tbsp. sesame oil (I used Olive Oil)
Chopped peanuts for garnish (I opted out)

Mix first 7 ingredients together and form into small meatballs.
In medium skillet, heat oil over medium heat.  Add meatballs and cook through, 6-8 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix remaining ingredients (except peanuts) and warm in microwave.  Toss meatballs with half of sauce and sprinkle with peanuts. Serve with remaining sauce for dipping.

Florida: Driving across from the Atlantic to the Gulf coast

If you enter Florida via I-95 and are heading over to the Gulf Coast, you will need to drive straight across Florida at some point and most of us do it on Hwy. 301 through the speed trap, tiny-motel infested towns like Starke and Waldo.  As you approach Gainesville, stay to the left on 301 for the quickest way to I-75 and soon you'll go through the town of Citra.

You will be thinking, "I should have gone through Gainesville so I could stop for something to eat or drink."  You will be falling asleep and thinking this a long, boring drive, when suddenly in front of you, looms this:

It will be a mystical moment, an Alice-In-Wonderland moment, where a fresh-squeezed orange juice will be labeled "DRINK ME."  And you will imbibe in delirium...

Toilet Paper Shopping: Take Your Calculator

Guest Writer:  Ruth Morse
I cannot do math in my head anymore. I can barely do it on paper. This complicates shopping for toilet paper. Is anyone else as confused as I am?

It used to be simple. Every brand except Scott's came in a four roll package. Every brand of TP was the same width. Every kind was double ply. Every brand had the same number of sheets per roll. It was easy to compare prices.
WHAT HAPPENED?
If you haven't noticed, some rolls are narrower than others. Some brands have shifted from the used-to-be-standard size of 4.5x4" per sheet to 4x4". That means I am forced to try and factor in square footage per roll. Huh?
Some are one-ply......two-ply......even three-ply are available. Some are quilted,....

Living Intentionally II, Gordon and Gail MacDonald

Part 2 of 2 on Living Intentionally
The idea of living intentionally is based upon the premise that we are the sum total of our resolves, whether we realize it or not.  Are you going to make them as you think God wants you to make them or are you going to let them be made for you by other people.  Resolves are your core intentions for living a life that pleases God.  These resolves are very different for each person.

Once you make your resolves, it requires great intention to commit to them and apply them each day in the big and little details of daily life:
  • how we treat people
  • how we respect people
  • how we respond to conflict and difficult times
  • what things we feel committed to say in public
  • what things we feel committed to not say in public

Resolves are intentions, not a list of rules; it is not legalism....

Living Intentionally, Gordon and Gail MacDonald

Part 1 of 2 about Living Intentionally
Although I've never met them, Gordon and Gail MacDonald have become my mentors, my life coaches, my favorite role models.  I keep in touch with them via my iPod from their visits to  Midday Connection and, of course, I love Gordon's books.  Gordon.  See?  We're on a first name basis, I mean who wouldn't be when someone is whispering in your ear on long, private car rides, right?  Whispering words of wisdom.

At 60 mph down the empty country highway, I was devouring this program when suddenly something Gail said was so resonant with me, I almost careened off the pavement. I figured I should share it with you, many of you may find it familiar....

What To Get a 6 Year Old

Eva's 6th birthday came and went.  It was, as you can see, big news in town.

Everything we did on the day before her birthday was prefaced with "This is the last time I'll do this as a 5 year old."  Heavy sigh.  A very dramatic day....

Turn Your Used Flip-Flops Into Playgrounds

I saw this the other day and it made me deliriously happy:  Through May 21, Old Navy will accept your old flip-flops and take them to TerraCycle where they will be recycled into playgrounds.

Simply deposit your used flip-flops in one of many colorful collection bins found inside Old Navy stores.   It's that easy.  As of this writing, TerraCycle is having some website issues, but you can find them on twitter @terracycle

Go ahead:  Rethink waste and have a positive impact on the environment, I dare you.  Besides, you know you need to get rid of all those nasty, chewed up rubber flip-flops smelling up your closet.

The Price of a Child

This was one of Patti's school assignments in Kindergarten or First Grade, while she was still at the public school.  She gasped when I showed it to her recently.  I think there would be a public outcry over this today.

Meek ones are the most expensive while bad ones are arbitrarily the cheapest.  It's interesting Patti put Husky and Fat ones the 2nd and 3rd most expensive.  Maybe she was thinking of the cost of upkeep.

I was saddened to see she only put a price of $.40 for herself, but then I saw she put "happy one" beside it.

Nathan Engels, Mr. Coupon - An Interview

I recently hooked up with WeUseCoupons.com  after meeting its administrator, Nathan Engels, at a conference in Nashville. He is an inspiring, energizing, motivational kind of guy who, at that time, I had never heard of before.

As I was getting acquainted with the We Use Coupons site, TLC's show, Extreme Couponing, began to make waves and create a buzz.  I started watching the show only to find Nathan Engels, a/k/a Mr. Coupon, front and center, one of Extreme Couponing's Extreme Couponers.  (Try saying that three times fast)

Of course the biggest buzz about the show tends to be derision that couponers would stockpile so much stuff.   The buzz is that these couponers should give stuff to charity (many do).  The buzz is that they work full-time on couponing and nothing else (many do).  But the buzz also is that more and more of us have turned back to couponing and have been motivated to be more frugal.

I thought it odd that Nathan Engels, previously unheard of, would suddenly pop up everywhere.  So when I recently was offered the opportunity to interview him via email, I jumped on it.  Several of you submitted questions for me to ask him and I tried to squeeze them all in.

First and foremost, I asked what he thought about the outcry against stockpiling.  "Greed is all in the eyes of the beholder," he said.  "When people save for 30, 40 or even 50 years for retirement, no one blinks an eye.  But if you or I want to save essentially using the same concept on my grocery bill, people think it's odd or greedy.  No one is demanding that people give half of their retirement away, but people seem to be clamoring for stock pilers to give items to charity."

Engels did, in fact, give a lot to charity, which was mentioned, but not pictured on the show.  He had the Food Bank come pick up items on the afternoon of the last day of filming, donating 700 - 800 boxes of cereal.   Most stockpilers claim that they plan meals around what they have in stock and continue to use stock.  The Engels family, for instance, didn't have to buy any diapers for their baby for over 14 months.  Click here to see his shopping list from the show and what was given to charity.

Engels continued, "I'm all for giving, we give abundantly, but I kind of take offense to people who say, 'Oh, you're greedy, give it away.'  I don't tell others how to spend their money OR what to do with their savings.  No one is recommending therapy for people who have $200,000 in the bank for retirement."

Contrary to what you might think, Engels hasn't been obsessed with coupons his whole life, he didn't get serious about coupons until after his marriage three years ago.   He and his wife realized they had accumulated too much debt when they merged their finances, so they got serious about saving money.  I had the opportunity to ask his mother a question.  I asked her if she saw this in his future when he was young?  " He
was my adventurous/unpredictable child
," she answered, "He's literally traveled the globe by himself, learned Spanish, and now is showing the country to save money! I'm very proud."

Below are some of the questions you submitted followed by Nathan Engels' answers, enjoy!

Me:  On the show, the coupons are for junk food, noodles, cookies, candy, frozen dinners.. How do you save money on healthy foods?

NE:  Look for sales.  More and more coupons are coming out for Organic products.  I always say that saving money is an intentional act.  Look for deals and you will find them everywhere!

Me:  I love the idea of saving all that money!  However.... everything I read or watch tells me it takes soooo much time to clip, organize, plan, etc.  I wonder if there is a way to get some of the benefit without all the time.

NE:  Having a method that works for you is the key here.  You have to find a system.  I spend 5 - 15 hours a week doing this because I know exactly what I'm doing.  Once you get a system that works, you'll be amazed at how quickly it goes!

Editor's Note:  Click here for my post on coupon organization.

Me:  One of my readers has really started cutting her bill a lot, but now she wants to cut it even more.  How can she get to the next level?  How can she acquire coupons  in the least costly manner?

NE:  I dumpster dive!!  That way I don't have to pay for coupons from the paper.  To see his video on Dumpster Diving:  Click here.  (Jen, I reluctantly post this.  I have great concerns where this might take you in life)

Me:  What is one moment from the show that stands out in your memory?

NE:  "I won't ever smell!"  I can't believe I said that! LOL.  (referring to a deoderant stock pile)

Praline Pecans: Tasty Tuesday

My sister-in-law Marilyn passed away unexpectedly almost two years ago now, which caused me to write this post on grief, but my point today is that Marilyn had an awesome recipe for Praline Pecans that I'd like to share with you.

Curious and curiouser is that my other sister-in-law Kathy has received several repeat messages from Marilyn's email account since Marilyn died.  The message is always the same:  the Praline Pecan recipe that Marilyn emailed Kath in October of 2003.   Kath received the original email in '03 and never received a duplicate until after Marilyn's 2009 death, the first arriving on the day of their father's burial, during the middle of the graveyard service.....

The Day Sky

I want both of us to start singing like two
Traveling minstrels
About this extraordinary existence
We share,

As if
You, I, and God were all married

And living in
A tiny
Room.
